England calls for Jadon Sancho, James Maddison, Mason Mount as Gareth Southgate signs new contract

England’s Gareth Southgate is backing Luka Modric to win FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award and insists England must make sure they get better to ensure history of being unsuccessful does not repeat itself.

England and Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford made it two goals in two consecutive games, providing England’s winner against Switzerland.

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Chelsea loanee Mason Mount and Leicester City midfielder James Maddison have been handed their first senior England call-ups for matches against Croatia and Spain in October.

Sancho, 18, is yet to be capped at England under-21 level but has been rewarded by Gareth Southgate for making a blistering start to the new season with Dortmund, where he has registered one goal and six assists in nine appearances across all competitions, despite starting only twice.

Chelsea academy graduate Mount has hit the ground running on loan at Derby County under Frank Lampard, contributing five goals and one assist in 14 appearances and playing a starring role as the Championship side eliminated Manchester United from the Carabao Cup on penalties.

Maddison is a less surprising choice, having immediately established himself as a key attacking influence at Premier League level since joining Leicester City from Norwich City for a reported fee of around £20 million. He has scored three goals and provided two more in seven league games.

Nathaniel Chalobah, another former Chelsea academy prospect, has also been named in the 25-man group despite being yet to start a Premier League match for Watford this season.

There is no place for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, but Ross Barkley is recalled along with Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks.

Speaking after Spurs’ 4-2 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League, Winks said he was dreaming of an England recall.

“It would be amazing,” he said. “I’ve only been back in the Tottenham team for the last few weeks or so, so I’m not holding my breath or anything. But it would be unbelievable for me to get back in. I’d love to. Representing my country is always an honour and I’ll just wait to see what happens.

“I feel fit, I feel good, I feel fresh. I feel like I did at this stage of last season. I feel confident. My ankle’s feeling good so I’m in a good frame of mind.”

Overall there are six uncapped players and the presence of a number of new faces adds a more youthful feel to the squad selected by Southgate, who confirmed on Thursday that he has signed a new contract to remain as England manager through to the 2022 World Cup along with assistant Steve Holland.

England take on Croatia in a UEFA Nations League match in Rijeka behind closed doors on Friday before travelling to Seville to face Spain on Monday.

They are still looking for their first points of the competition after losing their first group match 2-1 to Luis Enrique’s men at Wembley in September.
