TOP STORY: Ox edges closer to Chelsea switch

Reigning champions Chelsea are closing in on a deal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain after the midfielder rejected a new ÂŁ180,000-a-week contract at Arsenal, according to the Sun.

Considering he’s only ever been a squad player at the Emirates Stadium, starting just 16 Premier League matches last season, it perhaps seems strange that the Gunners are putting up such a fight to keep the 24-year-old. But the report claims that the club’s tactics have failed, with Oxlade-Chamberlain telling Arsene Wenger and chief executive Ivan Gazidis that he wants to leave.

Chelsea are prepared to pay ÂŁ35 million for the England international who, like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, is in the final year of his contract.

The Blues have also lined up bids for Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater, according to several reports in Britain, as Antonio Conte looks to build a new English core at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are increasingly confident of signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal this summer.

Argentine outlet Cielo Sports claim that Juan Foyth will be in London to complete his Spurs medical on Monday. 21.30 BST: Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has hinted that his side may be done for the summer transfer window.

Speaking before a 2-0 win against Leicester City, Mourinho had this to say: “Everyone knows I would like a fourth player and I can’t hide that because I had it in my mind. But I am happy if I am not going to have [a fourth player] and I don’t think I am going to have.”

20.50 BST: Ousmane Dembele is set to arrive on Monday, but Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde suggested his side will make more signings before the window closes.

20.30 BST: After watching Birmingham lose to Reading, Harry Redknapp bemoaned his luck in the transfer market.

“It was not the team I wanted to play against Reading,” Redknapp said. “We have struggled to bring in players in certain areas of the side. To be honest we have been outplayed in every game.

“I’ve asked for certain people who would have brought in the experience and quality we require. Unfortunately we have not been able to get them over the line.

“It doesn’t help when you lose young Carl Jenkinson, who has dislocated his shoulder and will be out for a long time.

“This is why I need to bring in new players. It has been difficult as I’ve discovered. I’ve been chasing Stuart Downing from Middlesbrough for four months without any success.”

20.02 BST: Huddersfield are close to signing experienced goalkeeper Rob Green from Leeds, Terriers boss David Wagner confirmed after their goalless draw against Southampton.

“We’d like to sign Rob Green,” he said. “We’ve agreed personal terms and we’ve spoken with Leeds as well.

“They are our players and we don’t want to sell them. It’s not like anybody has a gun to our head. If anything, we’d like to bring some players in. Hopefully we can get one or two over the line.”

17.04 BST: Sport reckons Philippe Coutinho‘s representatives will meet with Liverpool today in an effort to thrash out a transfer to Barcelona.

PAPER ROUND

Liverpool lead Sanches race

Liverpool face a testing final week of the window as Barcelona step up their interest in Philippe Coutinho, but, if they hold on to the Brazilian and complete a move for Renato Sanches, their midfield could look a lot stronger by the start of September.

According to the Daily Mirror, Sanches is keen to quit Bayern in search of first-team football after starting only eight games in all competitions last season. The 20-year-old has slipped further down the pecking order this summer following the arrival of Corentin Tolisso and James Rodriguez.

A loan deal appears most likely, with Sanches emerging as a late alternative to Jurgen Klopp’s failed pursuit of Naby Keita. If Liverpool can help the Portugal international reignite his form from Euro 2016, they will have a serious player on their hands.

Serge in activity at Spurs

Paris Saint-Germain full-back Serge Aurier could soon be a Tottenham player if all goes to plan in the club’s enquiry with the Home Office.

Spurs have a ÂŁ23.1m deal in place for Aurier, but the Telegraph reports that they are waiting for the green light on his visa following the 24-year-old’s arrest last year for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Tottenham are reportedly confident of signing Serge Aurier before the transfer window closes.

The incident saw Aurier banned from entering the country for a Champions League clash against Arsenal in November 2016 after his visa application was rejected.

Spurs are confident they can cut the remaining red tape, however, and finalise a move for the Ivory Coast international before the end of the window.

Tap-ins

Divock Origi‘s days appear numbered at Liverpool after he was left out of the squad for Wednesday’s win over Hoffenheim. The Belgian striker has made just one appearance so far this season in the draw at Watford and the Telegraph claims he is being tracked by Marseille and Anderlecht.

– Another player expected to leave Anfield is Mamadou Sakho, with West Brom eyeing a ÂŁ30m move for the centre-back. Sakho impressed on loan at Crystal Palace last season and could join the Baggies as a replacement for Manchester City-bound Jonny Evans, claims the Telegraph.

Islam Slimani is a target for Watford and Newcastle after struggling to command a starting spot at Leicester. The striker joined the Foxes for ÂŁ29m a year ago, but the Daily Mirror reports that he could be on the move after alerting potential suitors with a midweek brace against Sheffield United in the League Cup.

– One transfer that doesn’t appear to be happening is West Ham’s bid for William Carvalho. Sky Sports claims the Hammers have ended their interest in the midfielder after Sporting Lisbon refused to budge in their ÂŁ40m valuation.
