Man City, Chelsea eyeing Alderweireld situation; Foxes to give Gray new deal

Shaka Hislop breaks down just how badly Man City need Tottenham centre back Toby Alderweireld.

Deadline day has come and gone, and all the latest deals and potential deals can be found here, but there’s plenty brewing in the market as clubs begin to look toward January.

TOP STORY: Alderweireld’s future in doubt

All looked pretty much sweetness and light for Tottenham Hotspur as they strolled imperiously past Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday, but the Telegraph reports that there could soon be a fly in the ointment.

It says the future of key central defender Toby Alderweireld is in the spotlight after his agent “plunged it into doubt” by saying Alderweireld “deserves either a correct contract from Tottenham or a transfer” and adding that “all the top clubs” would be interested.

Against a backdrop of stalled talks over the Belgium international’s contract, both Manchester City and Chelsea are being kept up to date on the situation.

Alderweireld’s deal runs until 2019 but, if the option to add a further year is taken up, it would mean a £25 million release clause — which could be triggered that summer — would come into play.

And that, the Telegraph adds, means Tottenham “may have to seriously consider listening to offers if no new contract can be agreed.”

The future’s bright, the future’s Gray

Demarai Gray is set to receive a generous new deal.

Leicester manager Craig Shakespeare has said Demarai Gray has a big future with the Foxes — and the Mirror reports that the club want to back Shakespeare’s words by offering the winger a “bumper new contract.”

Former Birmingham City player Gray was linked with both Spurs and Bournemouth over the summer, but stayed at the King Power after Leicester said they had not received a bid that matched their valuation.

And in order to stave off further interest when the window reopens, the Foxes will bump up the England Under-21 international’s deal, with the Mirror reporting that he is “set to see his £25,000-a-week salary rocket to around double that.”

Gray, speaking after Leicester lost at home to Chelsea at the weekend, said the club were in talks with his representatives but that he would “just concentrate on playing football.”

Tap-ins

— Sporting Kansas City defender Erik Palmer-Brown could be on his way from MLS to Manchester when winter comes around, according to the Mail.

It reports that Manchester City “are lining up a January deal for Palmer-Brown,” with the 20-year-old, out of contract at the end of the American season, having been offered terms by City.

It is likely that he would join them and then head out on loan, with the Kansas club retaining his MLS rights and the move thought very likely to go through.

— Things have started nicely for Leeds United in the Championship, but they are not resting on their laurels, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.

It says the club “are lining up a January deal for Japan international midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi, who plays for Gamba Osaka, and have started talks aimed at bringing the 21-year-old to Elland Road.

The development comes after sporting director Victor Orta said earlier this month that Leeds were “close to signing a big surprise from Asia.”
