Liverpool and Salzburg rewrote the UEFA club competition record books with their marathon campaigns last term, setting marks other teams can hope to beat this time around.
By scoring twice in their UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg at Roma last May, Liverpool eclipsed Barcelona’s record of 45 goals in a single European season, set 18 years ago. However, following that 4-2 loss in Rome, the English team could no longer emulate Espanyol’s record of a 15-game unbeaten UEFA club campaign.
Meanwhile Salzburg’s 20-match European run, taking in UEFA Champions League qualifying and progress to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals, equalled the longest UEFA club season recorded by Bordeaux, Villarreal (each including UEFA Intertoto Cup and UEFA Cup) and more recently Basel in 2012/13, by a similar method to Salzburg.
Twenty-three teams (including Ajax, Bordeaux, Celtic and Sevilla) enter the group stage of either club competition able to surpass that mark, either by reaching a final or in 14 cases, making the UEFA Europa League semis (alternatively they would match it as quarter-finalists).
UEFA.com looks at the single-season and overall record holders for the main UEFA men’s club competitions.
