A-League admits VAR red card for Wellington Phoenix’s Ryan Lowry was wrong

Wellington Phoenix were looking the goods against the top side before a VAR call shook things up and gave the Perth the tools to equalise in the late stages of the game.
An action packed game at Coopers Stadium saw Adelaide run out 2-1 winners over Brisbane.
Two red cards and a fair bit of push and shove sent the final fifteen minutes of Adelaide v Brisbane into chaos.

Wellington Phoenix have been told the decision to show a red card to defender Ryan Lowry in their 1-1 A-League draw with Perth was a mistake.

Lowry was dismissed shortly after coming on as a second-half substitute when referee Adam Kersey was referred by VAR to view footage of a challenge by the central defender on Glory winger Chris Ikonomidis.

The decision left Phoenix coach Mark Rudan fuming, labelling the officiating of the fixture “an absolute joke” after the match.

Phoenix chief executive David Dome told AAP in an email he had spoken to A-League boss Greg O’Rourke on Monday morning.

During the conversation O’Rourke told Dome “VAR is not intended to be used that way.”

Lowry’s dismissal is one of several decisions expected to be discussed by the league’s match review panel on Monday.

Ryan Lowry’s contentious red card saw Wellington Phoenix shorthanded against league leaders Perth Glory.

Brisbane are sweating on an outcome on the length of ban for midfielder Stefan Mauk after the Australian under-23 international was dismissed for a tackle on Adelaide’s Craig Goodwin.

Mauk was knocked out after making the tackle on Goodwin, with Adelaide players reacting angrily to the challenge.

Adelaide’s Taylor Regan could also find himself in the crosshairs of the panel after he was also red-carded for an apparent eye gouge on Mauk earlier in the Reds’ 2-1 win over the Roar.
