Top Story: Arsenal close in on striker signing
Arsenal may finally be about to sign a striker, with the north London club heavily linked with a move for Deportivo La Coruna forward Lucas Perez.
The Spanish forward — known as Lucas — has also been a target for Everton this summer, but Arsenal have reportedly jumped to the front of the queue for his signature after deciding to trigger the player’s £17 million release clause.
Lucas was a graduate of the Atletico Madrid academy but was forced to leave Spain to kick-start his career after failing to break into first-team football in La Liga. The forward returned to Spain in a permanent switch to Deportivo last summer and went on to score 17 league goals.
The news comes after a summer of disappointment in Arsene Wenger’s search for a striker, with the Gunners priced out of transfer tussles for Gonzalo Higuain and Alexandre Lacazette.

Saints edge closer to landing Boufal
Southampton, no matter how many of their stars are poached, just keep on rolling and they are now on the verge of bringing in another highly rated young player.
Claude Puel knows the Moroccan international from his time in Ligue 1 and was already rebuffed with a £12.85m offer, but talks are ongoing and the winger appears to be heading to St Mary’s despite interest from Watford.
Napoli denied on Kane bid
Napoli have been stung this summer as their superstar striker Gonzalo Higuain joined bitter rivals Juventus and despite the £75.3 million fee, Partenopei followers are hurting.
Aurelio De Laurentiis is good for a splash in the market though and it appears the enigmatic owner has made an audacious move for Harry Kane.
Napoli, after seeing their efforts to sign Inter Milan’s Mauro Icardi ended, asked Tottenham about their Premier League top goalscorer, according to Sky Sport Italia, but received a flat no.
With only Arkadiusz Milik through the door to replace the Argentina superstar, Napoli are struggling to find a top-class replacement.
Matuidi to land in Turin
Juventus continue to dominate the transfer window despite losing Paul Pogba to Manchester United.
The Bianconeri have made a plethora of shrewd moves and are ready to make one more in PSG’s athletic midfielder Blaise Matuidi.
Gazzetta dello Sport reports the fee could be £25.5m with the French international slotting into an all-star midfield alongside Miralem Pjanic, Sami Khedira and Claudio Marchisio.
A meeting in Monte Carlo on Thursday should finalise the details and send the 29-year-old to Turin.
Fiorentina to save Jovetic?
It’s been a sad story since Stevan Jovetic moved from Fiorentina to Manchester City, where injuries curtailed his impact despite flashes of his class.
A predictable move back to Italy occurred, but the madness at Inter meant the Montenegrin failed to flourish there too.
Now though, Jojo could make his way back to Florence, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, in one of the more romantic moves of the window.
Viola fans were bitter when Jovetic ditched them, though if he brings goals with him it will likely ease the transition back to the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
– West Ham continue to be busy at the back end of the transfer window. ESPN FC sources say the Hammers have had a £5.5m deal ratified for Sion’s Swiss under-21 international midfielder Edimilson Fernandes.
– Sunderland will hope to lessen the gloom at the Stadium of Light after a dismal start by bringing in Javier Manquillo from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan.
The Sunderland Echo report that the Black Cats have already brought the former Liverpool defender in and a medical is scheduled later in the week.
– Chelsea have farmed out Croatian starlet Mario Pasalic to AC Milan on a season-long loan after last year’s similar deal with Monaco.
After suffering from back problems, a medical is all that is missing from the Rossoneri landing the 21-year-old midfielder, with the Blues hoping it will help the Italian giants open up to the prospect of selling Alessio Romagnoli.
