Awesome Bayern beat Leipzig as Sevilla hit nine

WEDNESDAY

Bayern München 3-0 RB Leipzig (Thiago 17, Alonso 25, Lewandowski 45p)
Bayern produced an awesome first-half performance against their main title challengers to open up a three-point lead over Leipzig at the month-long winter break. Thiago Alcántara scored the first and made the second brilliantly before Leipzig had star man Emil Forsberg sent off on the half-hour for a foul on Philipp Lahm. Robert Lewandowski, who hit the woodwork to set up Thiago’s opener, got the third from the penalty spot after Douglas Costa was brought down.

Köln 1-1 Bayer Leverkusen (Modeste 21; Wendell 44)
Leverkusen end 2016 in ninth having had much of the play at a Köln side unbeaten at home this season. Leverkusen’s 17-year-old midfielder Kai Havertz bolstered his growing reputation by setting up Wendell for the equaliser.

Paris Saint-Germain 5-0 Lorient (Meunier 25, Touré 44og, Thiago Silva 50, Cavani 63p, Lucas 70)
Third-placed Paris ended their three-game winless Ligue 1 run with a comfortable defeat of lowly Lorient to move back to within five points of leaders Nice, who were held 0-0 at Bordeaux. Edinson Cavani, fouled for the penalty he scored, is now up to 18 goals in the league this season.

Who makes your Team of the Year?

Monaco 2-1 Caen (Falcao 48p, Bakayoko 76; Bazile 90+4)
Monaco recovered from Sunday’s home 3-1 loss to Lyon to maintain second place and close to within two points of Nice. Radamel Falcao now has ten goals in a league season for the first time since leaving Atlético Madrid for his first Monaco spell in 2013. Caen ended with ten men, having had Damien Da Silva sent off in the 51st minute.

Benfica 2-0 Rio Ave (Mitroglou 13, Pizzi 42)
Benfica restored their four-point Liga advantage over Porto as Pizzi made the first then scored the second, only to then be sent off near the end.

Sevilla 9-1 Formentera, agg: 14-2 (Ganso 14, Vietto 22 43 45, Ben Yedder 24 55 89, Sarabia 27 77; Gabri 61)
Fortmetera were the first team to reach the Copa del Rey round of 32 from Spain’s fourth tier in six years but they were no match for Sevilla. Luciano Vietto and Wissam Ben Yedder both ended 2016 with maiden Sevilla hat-tricks while Ganso scored his first goal since his summer move from São Paulo.

Barcelona 7-0 Hércules, agg: 8-1 (Digne 37, Rakitić 45p, Rafinha 50, Arda 55 86 89, Alcácer 73)
Barcelona are also into the last 16 in their pursuit of a third straight Copa del Rey victory, a feat they were the most recent club to achieve between 1951 and 1953. Lucas Digne became the first of Barcelona’s six summer 2016 signings to open his competitive goal account for the club, followed later in the match by Paco Alcácer. Rafinha also made it a happy day for the Alcántara family after Thiago’s heroics for Bayern while Arda Turan got his second hat-trick of December after his UEFA Champions League treble against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

TUESDAY

Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Augsburg (Dembélé 47; Ji Dong-Won 33)
Missing suspended Marco Reus in addition to a host of injuries, Dortmund came from behind to end 2016 with a fourth consecutive competitive draw. Ousmane Dembélé produced a fine finish from Shinji Kagawa’s pass to equalise but Dortmund could not make the most of their superiority to clinch all three points.

Atlético Madrid 4-1 Guijuelo, agg: 10-1 (Gaitán 16, Correa 21, Juanfran 28, Torres 45; Pino 80)
Even with a rotated team, resting the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Atlético comfortably built on their Copa del Rey round of 32 first-leg advantage to end the hopes of the third-tier strugglers, who were reduced to ten men while 3-0 down. Atleti join previously-qualified Real Madrid among others in Friday’s round of 16 draw with the two-legged ties in January.

MONDAY

Porto 2-1 Chaves (Depoitre 72, Danilo 77; Rafael Lopes 12)
The Dragons made it five wins from five and gained a measure of revenge for last month’s Portuguese Cup defeat. Nuno Espírito Santo’s side did not have it easy, though, and looked set for more disappointment when they went into the last 20 minutes still trailing to an early Rafael Lopes goal. Substitute Laurent Depoitre made it 1-1 before Danilo’s first goal of the season sealed the points.
