Harry Kane’s unerring finish completed Tottenham’s safe passage to their second-ever UEFA Champions League quarter-final.
Hugo Lloris made several saves in the first 45 minutes with Julian Weigl, Mario Götze and Marco Reus all denied by the goalkeeper though Spurs could have taken the lead when Heung-Min Son was sent clear only for the Korean to fire wide.
Kane fared better from Moussa Sissoko’s through ball in the 49th minute, sweeping his finish around Roman Bürki and becoming Spurs’ all-time leading goalscorer in Europe with 24 in the process.

Lucien Favre had called for a “clever” performance from his side but it was Tottenham who demonstrated the nous to navigate their way to the quarter-finals. Kane provided for Tottenham what Dortmund lacked all evening, his clinical touch proving the difference at the end of an absorbing contest. If the Englishman got the winner tonight, however, it was Lloris’s string of first-half saves to prevent Dortmund breaking the deadlock that won the tie.

Lloris kept out a stoppage-time penalty on Saturday and carried that form into this fixture. The Spurs skipper came up big just as his team were enduring sustained pressure in a BVB-dominated first period, making a succession of stunning stops to add to his already impressive collection: there was one low down to his right from Weigl, another high to his left to deny Götze and a third from Reus’s deflected effort. The low save late on to frustrate Paco Alcácer rounded off a brilliant display.
