Group A3: Italy 1-1 Poland
Jorginho salvaged a point for Italy in Roberto Mancini’s first competitive game in charge, converting a penalty with 12 minutes left in Bologna after Jakub Błaszczykowski brought down Federico Chiesa. Piotr Zieliński had turned in Robert Lewandowski’s 40th-minute cross for the opener.

Group B2: Turkey 1-2 Russia
Denis Cheryshev put the FIFA World Cup quarter-finalists ahead in Trabzon with a superb left-footed volley. Serdar Aziz levelled before the break, but Artem Dzyuba produced a cool finish after the restart from Yuri Gazinski’s lofted pass.

League C

Group C1: Albania 1-0 Israel
In a tight game, Taulant Xhaka struck from just outside the box in the 55th minute for what proved the winner, despite Eran Zahavi starting for Israel after a year away from the team.

Group C4: Lithuania 0-1 Serbia
Dušan Tadić scored one penalty and had a second saved late on as Serbia got off to a winning start. The visitors hit the woodwork four times, twice through Aleksandar Mitrović, but were almost denied victory when Fiodor Černych fired wide.

Group C4: Romania 0-0 Montenegro
Romania were unable to make their dominance count at home, captain Vlad Chiricheş missing a good chance early on before going off with a knee injury. Danijel Petković saved Claudiu Keșerü’s second-half header as Montenegro held firm.

League D

Group D3: Azerbaijan 0-0 Kosovo
Kosovo’s runs of nine consecutive competitive losses and four straight wins in all matches both ended in a level game in Baku. Azerbaijan’s all-time leading scorer Gurban Gurbanov took charge as coach for the first time in a competitive game.

Group D3: Faroe Islands 3-1 Malta
In an exciting 12-minute first-half spell, an opportunistic Jóan Edmundsson strike was followed by a well-taken René Joensen goal before Michael Mifsud scored his 41st for Malta after a 20-game wait. Hallur Hansson made it 3-1 not long after half-time.
