TOP STORY: Mourinho wants two new defenders

Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United to sign two new defenders before the transfer window closes, but in order to do that, two members of his current squad must be shown the door at Old Trafford.

The Daily Record claims Southampton’s experienced centre-half Jose Fonte and Monaco’s promising young right-back Fabinho are the players targeted by Mourinho as he seeks to overhaul his defensive options, despite making a 100 percent start to the Premier League season with three wins in three matches.

This could lead Marcos Rojo to join La Liga side Valencia as a replacement for the Arsenal-bound Shkodran Mustafi, while it is reported that Napoli and AC Milan could be keen to bring Matteo Darmian back to Italy.

18.26 BST: There’s a player heading for the exit at Anfield. Club sources inform ESPN FC that Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto will be joining Lazio upon completion of a medical.

“This is a club which has brought through goalkeepers like Matt Murray, Wayne Hennessey and Carl Ikeme, and that is a big thing to see that pathway for a young keeper coming through. And to have a manager here who was a very good goalkeeper himself is good as well!”

10.52 BST: Hull are about to enter the transfer market. And not before time. The newly promoted Premier League side have made a brilliant start to the season, but they’ve done it with a threadbare squad of only 13 senior players and two of them are goalkeepers.

Conte looks to Serie A to bolster defence

Antonio Conte will step up his efforts to add new defensive options to Chelsea’s squad before the transfer window shuts by raiding Serie A for Lazio’s Stefan De Vrij and Marcos Alonso of Fiorentina.

With deals for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly and AC Milan’s Alessio Romagnoli looking unlikely as deadline day looms, a £21m move for Netherlands international De Vrij is suggested by the Sun. The 24-year-old moved to Rome for £6m following the 2014 World Cup but missed most of last season with a knee injury.

Chelsea could be lining up a bid for Netherlands international Stefan De Vrij.

Meanwhile, Marca reckons former Bolton man Alonso will also arrive, with a €25m fee mooted, in order to give Conte more tactical flexibility and options to shuffle his pack. The 25-year-old can play at left-back or in midfield.

Brozovic to the Premier League?

The arrival of Joao Mario at Inter Milan could open the door for Arsenal, Chelsea or Juventus to sign Marcelo Brozovic, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims, but there is also a chance the midfielder could sign a new contract to extend his stay at the San Siro.

The Croatia international was on the bench for the Nerazzurri‘s 1-1 draw with Palermo on Sunday evening, with talks due to take place afterwards in order to determine his next move. Chelsea are said to have the firmest interest, but Inter have put a €25-30m asking price on the 23-year-old, which may deter them from following up.

– Schalke are targeting a shock loan move for Chelsea defender Kurt Zouma, according to the Daily Mail. The France international has been injured since February and missed Euro 2016 after rupturing ligaments in his right knee. But in order for him to continue his rehabilitation and get regular playing time, it is reported that Antonio Conte could let the 21-year-old move to Germany temporarily.

– Leicester City are preparing to break their transfer spending record for a second time this summer by signing Sporting Lisbon striker Islam Slimani in a deal worth close to £30m, the Guardian reports. The arrival of Ahmed Musa from CSKA Moscow for £15m in July broke the Foxes’ record, but they are ready to do it again for Algeria international striker Slimani.

Nacer Chadli will undergo a medical at West Bromwich Albion on Monday ahead of a club-record £13m transfer from Tottenham. The Guardian claims Belgium international Chadli could be the first of several new signings made by the Baggies in the coming days with Tony Pulis targeting four other players.
