Neid named best women’s coach in FIFA awards

Silvia Neid has been honoured as best coach at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Zurich.

European champions Germany won Olympic gold for the first time in Brazil in August in the last tournament of Neid’s 11-year reign. Neid, now succeeded by Steffi Jones, topped the poll of national coaches and captains, members of the media and fans ahead of Pia Sundhage, who led Sweden to a surprise silver medal, and the United States’ English coach Jill Ellis, the winner in 2015.

Neid, previously FIFA World Coach of the Year for Women’s Football in 2010 and 2013, the only multiple winner, said: “I’m overwhelmed, this is a great honour – the third time! My gratitude goes to my team and the team behind the team, the technical staff. Thank you for the years.”

United States and Houston Dash forward Carli Lloyd was voted best player for the second year running, ahead of Melanie Behringer of Bayern München and Germany, and Rosengård and Brazil striker Marta.
