Fiorentina’s 2-1 victory against Juventus was just one of several notable results for the UEFA Europa League sides over the weekend as the likes of Roma, Tottenham and Manchester United all made headlines.
The race for glory in Serie A heated up on Sunday as Fiorentina got the better of champions Juve thanks to goals from Croatian pair Nikola Kalinić and Milan Badelj. That lifted the Viola to eighth, with the real beneficiaries second-placed Roma – now a point back having played a game more – with Francesco Totti having marked 25 consecutive years in Italy’s top flight during the Giallorossi’s 1-0 win at Udinese.
Totti’s fellow veteran forward Zlatan Ibrahimović also had an afternoon to remember as he grabbed a late equaliser for Manchester United in their 1-1 draw with fierce rivals Liverpool. United lie sixth, 12 points off frontrunners Chelsea, while Tottenham are seven behind in second following Harry Kane’s hat-trick in a 4-0 defeat of West Brom.
Elsewhere, Lyon crashed to a surprise 3-2 loss at struggling Caen in France and Olympiacos dropped points in the Greek Super League for only the third time this season. In Israel, Hapoel Beer-Sheva maintained their march towards the title and APOEL retained their one-point lead at the Cypriot summit.
