Barcelona, Juventus and Paris march on

WEDNESDAY
Barcelona 3-1 Athletic Club, agg: 4-3 (Suárez 35, Neymar 48p, Messi 78; Saborit 51)
Lionel Messi’s free-kick 12 minutes from time took Barcelona into the Copa del Rey quarter-finals over the next two midweeks after the holders overturned their first-leg deficit. Luis Suárez’s 100th goal for Barcelona, in only his 120th appearance, put them ahead on away goals and Neymar converted a penalty which he won himself to edge his team in front on aggregate. Enric Saborit replied and extra time loomed before Messi joined his attacking colleagues on the scoresheet.

Juventus 3-2 Atalanta (Dybala 22, Mandžukić 34, Pjanić 75p; Konko 72, Latte Lath 81)
Holders Juve set up a Coppa Italia quarter-final trip to either last season’s runners-up AC Milan or Torino but were made to sweat by their visitors. Pablo Dybala produced a brilliant volleyed opener then set up Mario Mandžukić for the second but substitute Abdoulaye Konko reduced arrears. Not long afterwards Stephan Liechtsteiner was fouled in the box and Miralem Pjanić converted only for another Atalanta sub, teenager Emmanuel Latte Lath, to made it close again.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Metz (Thiago Silva 27 72)
Paris remain on course to win a fourth straight French League Cup in Lyon on 1 April after making it through to the semi-finals, where they will visit Bordeaux in a fortnight. Thiago Silva twice headed in from Ángel Di María corners, the third consecutive competitive game (in as many different competitions) in which the captain has scored.

Leverkusen 1-0 Atlético Mineiro (Hernández 52)
The Werkself ended an 11-day training camp in Florida with a friendly victory over Brazilian side Atlético Mineiro. Playing in front of a host of Mexican fans in Orlando, Javier Hernández headed in the only goal of the game.

TUESDAY
Napoli 3-1 Spezia (Zielinski 3, Giaccherini 55, Gabbiadini 57; Piccolo 35)
Piotr Zielinski’s third goal in his last seven appearances set Napoli on their way to a place in the last eight of the Coppa Italia. Emanuele Giaccherini marked his first start of the season with the second as the Partenopei stretched their unbeaten run to 12 games.

Sochaux 1-1 Monaco, 3-4pens (Andriatsima 16; Moutinho 84)
João Moutinho’s first goal at club level since 28 August was a timely one. Monaco triumphed in the resulting shoot-out – the French League Cup quarter-final tie went straight to spot kicks – after Marco Ilaimaharitra (post) and Moussa Sao (over) failed with their attempts. Monaco are at home to Nancy after Wednesday’s semi-final draw.

Atlético Madrid 2-3 Las Palmas, agg: 4-3 (Griezmann 49, Correa 61; Livaja 57 89, García 90)
Two late goals condemned Atlético to defeat on the night, but they were not enough to deny Diego Simeone’s men a berth in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. The Rojiblancos will wait for more news on left-back Lucas Hernández, who was substituted at half-time with a right thigh injury.

Guimarães 0-2 Benfica (Gonçalo Guedes 34 40)
Benfica followed up their weekend victory against Guimarães in the Liga by confirming their participation in the semi-finals of the Portuguese League Cup, two goals from Gonçalo Guedes ensuring the Eagles made it three wins from three in Group D.

Bayern München 5-0 Eupen (Hummels 45, Benko 48 80, Vidal 66, Douglas Costa 71)
Midfielder Fabian Benko, 18, scored twice as Bayern rounded off their training camp in Doha with an impressive win in their first friendly outing of 2017. Eupen are 13th in the Belgian top flight.
