Frankfurt one game from Europa League unbeaten record

If Eintracht Frankfurt avoid defeat at Benfica on 11 April they will equal AtlĂ©tico Madrid’s record 15-game unbeaten streak in the UEFA Europa League.

MEET THE QUARTER-FINALISTS

Frankfurt have won eight and drawn their other two matches in the competition this season, adding to a four-game undefeated run at the end of their last appearance in the competition, in 2013/14 (when they fell on away goals in the round of 32 after drawing 2-2 at Porto and 3-3 in the home return).

Frankfurt knock out Inter

That sequence is one match short of the UEFA Europa League best, set by Atlético and sandwiching their 2012 final triumph. Even if Eintracht miss out, Chelsea could equal the record in the quarter-finals, as their run stands at 13, including the semis and final of their 2013 success, and their nine wins and a draw this season.

Atlético's 2012 glory

Longest unbeaten runs in UEFA Europa League (since 2009/10, group stage to final)

15 Atlético Madrid (3 November 2011–25 October 2012)
14 Eintracht Frankfurt (28 November 2013–)
13= Chelsea (25 April 2013–)
13= Salzburg (3 November 2016–15 March 2018)
12= Juventus (16 September 2010–10 April 2014)
12= Liverpool (17 September 2015–14 April 2016)
12= Villarreal (1 October 2015–28 April 2016)

Should Chelsea, Frankfurt or Villarreal (five wins, five draws this term) finish the Baku final with no defeats, they will be the first team to end a 15-match UEFA Europa League campaign without a loss. That would emulate Espanyol’s achievement in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup, as statistically Espanyol’s penalties loss to Sevilla in the final counts as a draw over 120 minutes.

One record has already gone this season. When Zenit slumped 3-1 against Villarreal in the round of 16, it ended the Russian club’s streak of 23 UEFA Europa League home games without defeat. Benfica have now equalled second-placed Sporting CP’s run of 20, and could make it to 22 by this season’s climax.
