My 2019/20 Champions League Predictions, straight from the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig – looking at the favourites, overachievers, underachievers and top scorers.

So let’s start with the main one, the Champions League favourites. Two of the most fancied teams by the bookies are last year’s winners, Liverpool and Barcelona. Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, lifted the Champions League final – after beating we all know about Liverpool, world Class defensive spine in Alisson, Van Dijk and Fabinho, attacking fullbacks in Alexander-Arnold and Robertson and an electric front three in Mane, Salah and Firmino.

As for Barcelona who again won La Liga, the additions of Frenkie De jong & Anton Griezmann, will definitely play a factor in them being favorites – Frenkie De Jong playing an incredible Champions League campaign with Ajax and unexpectedly reaching the semi-final, Frenkie also picked up midfielder of the season at the Uefa awards night. Griezmann was key to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in the vital games last season, helping his side finish second to Barcelona in La Liga and after being arguably France’s best player at the Russia World Cup 2018, picking up the biggest trophy of them all – it’s understandable Valverede’s Barca have signed the World Cup winning frenchmen.

As for my favorites, they let me down last year – but I’m sticking to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid. You’d think losing Antoine Griezmann would make a side worse but it seems to have forced Simeone to adapt his system, he’s tweaked his 4-4-2 and turned it into a diamond, using Thomas Lemar behind the strikers, supported by a ferocious midfield trio of Saul, Koke and Thomas Partey – Atleti have also overhauled their full backs with attacking talent in Kieran Trippier and Renan Lodi, whilst Joao Felix is the stardust in the side playing off Alvaro Morata.

The team to watch, and the side who I think will overachieve – is Julian Nagelsmann’s Rb Leipzig. Nagelsmann’s side are currently sitting top of the Bundeslig, having held out for a draw against Niko Kovac’s Bayern Munich on the weekend – it wouldn’t surprise me to see Nagelsmann’s men get the better of the Bavarians over the course of the season and win their first Bundesliga title. As for Rb in Europe, an Ajax esque season could happen – similar situation with a group which they should top or at least go through in and with the quality coming through at Leipzig you could see them shock some of the better sides in the knock-outs.
